The Freedom Trail: A Walk Into History (Optional Fee-Paid Concurrent Activity)

Thursday, July 26, 10 AM - 4 PM

Take in the rich history of America's Revolution.  The Freedom Trail is a 2.5 mile red-brick walking trail that leads you to 16 nationally significant historic sites, every one an authentic American treasure. Preserved and dedicated by the citizens of Boston in 1958, when the wrecking ball threatened, the Freedom Trail today is a unique collection of museums, churches, meeting houses, burying grounds, parks, a ship, and historic markers that tell the story of the American Revolution and beyond.  It's fun, it's entertaining, it's really interesting it's American Revolutionary history but not the same old story....

It's a long walk, wear comfortable clothing and walking shoes that are thoroughy broken in. Cameras recommended and feel free to take notes. Attendance is limited to conference registrants. You must register by June 15 to attend this optional event. The League may cancel this event if there are not enough registrants, and will refund registration fees upon cancellation; both minimum and maximum participant limits apply.

Boston grew up around transportation -- the wharfs and the isthmus to the mainland -- and reflects the ethics and morals of its founders.  Its early cultural landscape reflected the tension between vernacular entertainment for the sailors and farmers, and cultural enrichment for members of New England society.  Join Sarah D. Kelly, Executive Director of Boston Preservation Alliance, and other Bostonians as they show you the landmark buildings and historical sites in the old downtown and relate the efforts to preserve and adaptively reuse, as well as develop the city anew. The tour ends at the Cutler Majestic Theatre at Emerson College in time for the LHAT annual meeting. You must register by June 15 to attend this optional event. The League may cancel this event if there are not enough registrants, and will refund registration fees upon cancellation; both minimum and maximum participant limits apply.

Please note: LHAT has canceled the 2007 Post-conference Performance Ramble due to insufficient registration.

Sunday, July 29, 9:15 AM - 8 PM

Have you visited the Berkshires recently? If not, you're without any doubt starved for some of the most breathtaking scenery you can imagine. The music and dance are exceptional as well.

Tanglewood Music Center was founded by a group of summer residents for presenting symphonic performances. Soon it became the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and a place for teaching new performers and developing new work. Today it features a wonderful amphitheatre ("shed") for classical music and many public amenities.

Ted Shawn and Ruth St. Denis created Jacob's Pillow Dance Center as a place to teach and develop new dances. Today it boasts restaurants, a museum, and two theatres for dance.

Today, Tanglewood and The Pillow lead the country in strengthening their respective art forms and are prime destinations for arts lovers from New York and the Northeast. Join them to eat lunch on the grounds and attend a performance at one of these two historic farm parks.

If you choose Tanglewood you will:

  • enjoy lunch on the grounds
  • hear Boston Symphony Orchestra
    Kurt Masur, Conductor
    All-Mozart Program
Symphonies Nr. 39, 40, and 41 ("The Jupiter")

If you choose Jacob's Pillow you will:

  • Attend either Mimulus (US Debut)
    Ted Shawn Theatre
"On the Left Side of Who Goes Up" fuses tango, samba, ballroom, theatre, and contemporary dance with imaginative elements from the company's Brazilian roots to produce an entertaining show of energetic warmth and vitality.
  • Or Bad Boys of Dance featuring Rasta Thomas (World Premiere)
    Doris Duke Studio Theatre
Rasta Thomas, superstar and heartthrob of the Kirov Ballet and Tharp's Movin' Out on Broadway, has assembled a stunning cast of male dancers for a Pillow Exclusive show, including world premieres by leading male choreographers.

Whichever you choose, you will experience the glory of the Berkshire Mountains at their best from the comfort of an exclusive motor coach, and have an exceptional performance experience to round out your LHAT conference.
