Conference and Theatre Tours - Summary

Summary Information About Lhat's
2003 Conference in Miami

  • One hundred ninety-three delegates from 37 different states, plus Canada and England, registered, including some 37% first-time attendees and 13% new LHAT members.

  • The POSH Theatre Ramble took delegates to visit The Crest Theatre at Old School Square in Delray Beach; the Lake Worth Playhouse; and the Paramount Theatre, Cuillo Centre and Harriet Himmel Gilman Theatre in West Palm Beach. The delegates enjoyed a fabulous lunch at the scenic and historic Breakers Hotel and toured Whitehall, a 1902 Henry Flagler estate.

  • Tours during the main conference included the Colony, Jackie Gleason and Lincoln Theatres in Miami Beach, the Miami Edison High School Auditorium, the Lyric Theatre and the Tower Theatres in Miami and the Coconut Grove Playhouse. The delegates were treated to tours and receptions of Coral Gables' Miracle Theatre and and the magnificent atmospheric Gusman Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Miami.

  • We offered 29 professional development workshops. Ten covered issues related to rescue and restoration; nineteen covered topics related to historic theatre operation and sustainability. Included this year were two in-depth intensive seminars: Sponsorship Marketing: How to Turn a Corporation into a Corporate Sponsor and A Donor Base You Can Take to the Bank.

  • Janna Jones, author of The Southern Movie Palace: Rise, Fall & Resurrection, and American dance legend Edward Villella, Founding Artistic Director of the Miami City Ballet, were guest speakers.

  • We hosted another successful Meet the LHAT Service Providers (the third annual!) reception as a lead-in to our First Night Banquet.

  • Many delegates took advantage of our optional pre-conference tour of Miami Beach's Art Deco District led by the Miami Design Preservation League.

  • We held our Closing Night reception and 2003 Annual Awards Banquet at the Historic and grand Biltmore Hotel.

  • Finally, Miami was "The Conference that YOU Created" because we offered several new opportunities for the delegates to network with their peers. Daily Peer Discussion Group Breakfasts were held to discuss topics that our members told us in advance were the most important to them as they rescue, restore, operate and sustain their communities' historic theatres. Brief One-on-One Advisory sessions were also offered so delegates could schedule time to interface with seasoned historic theatre professionals about specific issues they face.
